August Is Summertime Still

August 22, 2011

The days are warm and long. The trees are full and unyielding. I don’t even think about grabbing a sweatshirt anymore. I am here in August and I am fine.

The flowers still need watering and they are deep-deep in color.

The garden is overflowing and not just because I overplanted.

There are still so many days left of camping to be had–where the fire is the center of attention and s’mores are the staple food.

The Tigers are still winning-still winning!

With so many games still left to play.

His birthday is in the summer-his birthday is in August. And even though I made his cake in about 10 minutes and it had to have a football on it–his birthday is still in the summer.

The lake is still so warm and blue-so many days left of sun and sand and motor and speed.

So many days when a face is worth a thousand words.

There are still days of traveling-traveling to visit a place that was called home.

Days of hot and sun and reunion with family-

So many years between gathering together and it is August and we meet again.

We gather with those who we share heritage-blood-and past.

We gather to celebrate years of togetherness and Aunts and Uncles who celebrate with us 50 years together-

50 years–together–living their days dedicated to each other-to family-and under the umbrella of their Savior-of 50 years together serving God and leaving to us a heritage. Congratulations Uncle Larry and Aunt Judy–you gave in actions what so many fail to do by words.

We connect with family we have always known and those who were added and new. Family has a way of gathering under wings and widening the circle.

Cousins and Aunts and Uncles-all gathering to reconnect-because we have history together-we know we are family.

We smile-we laugh because it is August and it is warm and we have reunited-we play games–

And we make memories and introduce our children to the family we share so much of our past and hoping to share some of our futures.

I marvel at my Grandma-93 years old. Such a family-she and my Grandpa have grown. We are so many now–gathering together to celebrate life and family and it is August.

The hot winds still blow the clouds down from the sky-and when you are driving in Illinois-you can see it coming for miles and miles and miles.

The rain and wind beat down because it is still August and my Hero always believes he can outrun any storm–even though I am terrified of these black swirling clouds coming down from the sky–all because it is August and I grew up in Illinois where you can see the storms coming for miles and miles and miles…

And because in the afternoon when the birds are resting-you can hear the Cicadas singing. They sing because it is August–and it is warm and hot air is still and the birds are resting.

We are still traveling-it is only August-this time east to Dustin and Andrea’s-east to Pennsylvania-east-where everything is new-from a new baby coming and a new house to unpack–which is fine–because it is only August–

And we will still visit and still wear flip-flops and drink iced tea and grill outside and eat corn on the cob and watch for the sunset and stop Andrea every time she mentions pumpkins and hot chocolate and sitting by the fire–because it is still August and it is still August–

And August–

Is Summer Still!

    Exactly! I think August
gets a bit of a bum rap
    since so many kids start
    school before Labor Day
    now, including my own {SIGH}.
    Love your thoughts.
    Love the reunion pics and
    how beautiful your grandma
is and the happy 50th couple.
    Happy August!
    xx Suzanne

Even though it is the end of August, I am not willing to give up on summer yet either. You have captured what is great about the summer season perfectly in your photographs.
